5 Ways to Stay Healthy & Active During the Work Day

Working 9-to-5, sitting in a desk all day, can make it hard to keep up a desired healthy lifestyle. Your eyes burn from staring at a computer screen all day, you have not gotten up to walk as much as you should, and to top it all off you start to “stress-snack” on whatever is in the office kitchen. One of my 2018 goals was to eat healthier & get fit, so I wanted to make sure that I surrounded my workspace with positive thoughts, healthy snacks, and ways to stay active during the weekday.

 

1. Eat an Energizing Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a reason. Setting the tone for a long day with the nutrients your body needs (and wants) to consume can make or break the success and focus of an important meeting. Avocado toast is my favorite breakfast staple because it is easy to make and contains healthy fat and fiber benefits. My go-to for seasoning usually includes salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes with a side of smoothie (bananas, spinach, blueberries and coconut milk). Add an egg on top and you have a great balanced meal!

2. Don’t Forget to Laugh

"Laughing is the best medicine” is a great philosophy to live by. Work and everyday life can become very stressful, very fast. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I try to think about what I’m thankful for and look at the positive side. Life’s too short to not make it a party!

3. pack healthy snacks

Back in my college days I was able to eat a pizza, enjoy a milkshake, and still have room for more calories without the visible effects. Those glory days, however, have passed. Now, I often find myself wanting something crunchy to snack on while working full-time at my desk, especially when hitting that 3pm lag. Keeping healthy snacks handy has helped me avoid the I-shouldn’t-eat-this trip to the kitchen that we all have given in to. I’ve specifically been sticking to snacks that are low in calorie yet still tasty, AKA SkinnyPop popcorn in any flavor. The artificial flavor free popcorn is perfect because you can easily keep a bag on your desk, or separated into plastic bags for portion control, for easy access to a guilt-free snack. My go-to flavors are Original, Naturally Sweet, and Sea Salt & Pepper!

4. Use the Buddy System

Crushing healthy goals is easier (and more fun) when you have someone else to hold you accountable. From vowing no junk food to signing up for weekly yoga classes together, my co-workers have been a great support system this year towards aiding in a healthy & active lifestyle. If you have someone interested in taking the active pledge with you, utilize it - strength lies strong in numbers!

 

5.  Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Eating healthy and working out means nothing if you are not keeping yourself hydrated through out the day. Sometimes I realize in the afternoon that it has been a few hours since refilling my water bottle at the water fountain. Getting in the habit of drinking and refilling your water bottle every hour to hour and a half is a great way to keep hydrated and, because you'll probably have to use the restroom more, a great excuse to consistently take a walk away from your desk!
